What’s Happening in Texas Politics? Battle over the Appointment of Democrat Chairmanships

Many Texans may be unaware of the current policy in Austin for the Speaker of the House to award committee chairmanships to both the majority and minority parties. Even though Republicans held the majority during the last legislative session, Democrats in Texas were put in charge of 40% of House committees. This is a policy that has been in place for numerous years, but this past year, 81% of Republican voters asked Republicans in the Texas Legislature to end this practice. The vote on this rule change will be happening in Austin this next Thursday, January 12.

TIME FOR LEADERSHIP CHANGE INSIDE THE RNC

Republican voters want the party to deliver on their promises and the party under the current leadership of Ronna McDaniel has failed in doing so. Successful leadership includes winning elections, not just raising money, and the current leadership has failed to deliver election results or fulfillment of campaign promises. We cannot continue the same messaging and strategies that have failed in the past and expect a different outcome in the future. It is time for change.

Exposing the So-Called Respect for Marriage Act

The Respect for Marriage Act, H.R.8404, was signed on the White House lawn earlier this week. Contrary to bold claims, the law did nothing to change the legal status or provide any additional protections regarding marriage. Interracial marriage has been fully legal in the US since 1967 and same-sex marriage has been legal since 2015. The bill does; however, expose Americans to predatory lawsuits for holding to traditional values about life, marriage, and family. Hence, it has been dubbed the (dis)Respect for Marriage Act.
